Boston and the Charter School Cap

In Boston, three prominent lawyers are filing a lawsuit to overturn the state’s cap on charter schools.  Efforts by charter school advocates to raise the cap have been  defeated by state lawmakers. The lawyers will argue that the charter school cap has the effect of denying students in Boston and other urban districts their right to a quality education.

An article by Jim Peyser in the Winter 2014 issue of Education Next looks at the political debates over the charter cap in Boston.

In an Education Next column about the Vergara case in California, Josh Dunn and Martha Derthick wondered whether courts are the appropriate body to resolve debates over education policy.
