The New York State Board of Regents will vote this week on whether to allow organizations that award alternative certification to also award master’s degrees. “Education schools are on the verge of losing their franchises,” says Arthur Levine, former president of Teachers College. An article by New York education commissioner David Steiner that appeared in Ed Next in Winter 2005 (when Steiner was working at the National Endowment for the Arts) looked at what prospective teachers were studying at elite schools of education
