School districts attempting to turn around low-performing schools using federal funds are overwhelming choosing the least disruptive interventions. An article by Andy Smarick that appeared in the Winter 2010 issue of Ed Next argued that turnaround efforts like these are unlikely to succeed.

I’m sorry, is this a surprise to anyone at all?
Indeed, in non-charter schools, admins are trying to ruffle the fewest feathers possible. Hard to fault them if you put yourself in their shoes I suppose. Can be such pushback from all sides to radical new ideas.
We need an infusion of brave school leadership, perhaps in the mold of a Michelle Rhee, willing to test new ideas on a small scale and widely implement the ones found to move the needle.

I think Sean has the right idea…we also need to implement Fullan’s ideas on change….the “ready, fire, aim” strategy. Change must become the constant not the status quo.
