Work Hard. Be  Nice
Education Next | Spring 2009

Superstar teachers and great charter schools are saving thousands of young lives, writes Steven Brill, but the intensity and time commitment required of the teachers and principals in these schools is burning them out. In an excerpt from his new book, Class Warfare, published in this weekend’s Wall Street Journal, Brill argues that reformers need to find a middle ground for teachers and principals that gives them a work life somewhere between the status quo and an unsustainable sprint. Finding a way to inspire teachers without burning them out, and reaching into more American classrooms, means working with teachers unions, Brill concludes. In Spring 2009, EdNext published a look at the earliest days of KIPP, and at the lives of these superstar teachers and leaders in great charter schools.
