Is Desegregation Dead?
Fall 2010 | Education Next

In Albany, a city with many outstanding charter schools, 96 percent of students attending charters are black or Hispanic. In the Fall 2010 issue of Ed Next, Susan Eaton and Steve Rivkin discuss the relationship between segregation and student achievement and consider whether desegregation is dead.

An article appearing in the Summer 2010 issue of Ed Next, “A Closer Look at Charter Schools and Segregation,” found that charter schools are generally no more segregated than the district schools that students would otherwise attend.

And in the Fall 2009 issue of Ed Next, Peter Meyer considered how Albany came to possess the holy grail of charter schooling—quality and scale—in “Brighter Choices in Albany.”
