In Washington, DC, chancellor Michelle Rhee is thinking about making changes to a popular middle school to make it more attractive to the families who live in the school’s attendance zone, families who are more likely to be white and middle class than the students who currently attend the school. Two essays in the Fall 2001 issue of Ed Next looked closely at strategies for increasing the economic integration of schools.
