A new study compares states that had NCLB-like accountability systems in place before NCLB (control group) with states that did not (treatment group) to identify the effects of NCLB. The study finds that NCLB produced gains in math achiemevent, but not in reading. In the Summer 2009 issue of Ed Next, Diane Ravitch and John Chubb engaged in a debate over the impact of NCLB on student achievement and whether the law should be reauthorized.
