In Virginia, more students are being assessed based on portfolios instead of multiple-choice tests, which is resulting in higher scores and sudden surges in performance at some schools. In an article that appeared in Ed Next in 2004, Jay Mathews investigated whether portfolio assessments are reliable enough to be used for accountability purposes.
