Despite years of efforts to boost the number of black and Hispanic students who qualify for admission at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, a selective public school in Virginia that has been rated the top public school in the nation, this year’s freshman class includes only 4 black students and 13 Hispanic students. An article by Christine Rossell that appeared in the Spring 2005 issue of Ed Next looked at the history of magnet schools in the U.S. and changes in their admissions policies over time.
