Cognitive scientist Dan Willingham reviews the evidence on the impact of sleep on learning in the Winter issue of American Educator magazine. He explores how much sleep kids and teens are getting (not enough!) and what happens to students’ ability to think when they are sleepy. Finally, he looks at what could be done to get kids (especially teens) to sleep more, and reviews the research on school start times. A study published in Ed Next this summer found that earlier school start times were associated with lower test scores.
