Boston’s new mayor Marty Walsh has spoken often about the importance of the arts to the health of the city. So will he choose a school superintendent with a background in the arts? In an op-ed in the Boston Globe, Jon Garelick argues for making arts education a priority in the city’s schools.
A study appearing in the Winter 2014 issue of Ed Next looks at the impact of certain types of field trips on the students who take them. The study, a randomized experiment, found that students who took a field trip to an art museum have more knowledge about art, have stronger critical-thinking skills, exhibit increased historical empathy, display higher levels of tolerance, and have a greater taste for consuming art and culture.
