A popular program for gifted students at an elementary school in Brooklyn is being shut down and in the future “classes will be heterogeneously grouped to reflect the diversity of our student body and the community,” according to the principal of the school, P.S. 139. Some parents are questioning whether high-achieving students will be well-served under the new arrangements.
An article in Ed Next by Mike Petrilli, “All Together Now,” looked at one school’s efforts to educate a diverse group of students and at the challenges of meeting the needs of children with a wide range of abilities in once classroom.
