“As we celebrate the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s birth, we should ask why so many of the problems against which he struggled — segregation, poverty, persistent racial gaps in education and income — remain so much a part of American life,” writes Paul Peterson in an op-ed in the New York Daily News. He goes on to examine the ways in which the rise of the welfare state have contributed to a steep increase in single-parent families.

In an article for Education Next commissioned for the 50th anniversary of the Moynihan Report, Sarah McLanahan and Christopher Jencks look at the impact on children of growing up in a single parent family.
