In the Atlantic, Jessica Huseman looks at the reasons more black families are choosing homeschooling: often because they perceive a culture of low expectations for African American students and are unhappy with how their children—especially boys—are treated in schools.
According to the National Home Education Research Institute, Huseman reports, an estimated 220,000 African American children currently being homeschooled, and black students now make up an estimated 10 percent of the homeschoolers.
