When the Boston Public Schools commissioned a study to identify schools that are helping black and Latino boys close the achievement gap, they were unable to find any traditional district schools where black and Latino boys were achieving at levels that matched or exceeded state averages, writes Michael Jonas in Commonwealth magazine.
When the researchers did not find any exceptional schools within the district, they turned their attention to four district schools where outcomes for black and Latino boys were at least better than at other district schools. Charter school leaders contacted by Jonas wondered why their schools had not been included in the study, since black and Latino boys at many Boston charter schools are posting high test scores.
