Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C. was once an elite institution for African American students.  The school is now one of the lowest-performing schools in the district. As Emma Brown explains in an article in this Sunday’s Washington Post, a group of Dunbar alumni is preparing to ask the school district to grant the school greater control over hiring, spending, and admissions in an effort to turn things around.

Mike McShane tells the story of Dunbar’s rise and fall in a review of First Class: The Legacy of Dunbar, America’s First Black Public High School, by Alison Stewart.
