Since we last reported on the results of Ed Next’s “Top Books of the Decade” poll, Diane Ravitch remains in the lead. Her book, The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education, has crept up to 22.7% of the total votes cast. E. D. Hirsch’s book, The Knowledge Deficit: Closing the Shocking Education Gap for American Children, remains in second place, having dipped ever so slightly to 9.9% of the vote. The Flat World and Education: How America’s Commitment to Equity Will Determine Our Future, by Linda Darling-Hammond, is in third place with 8.3% of the vote (a bit higher since we last checked in). In fourth place is “It’s Being Done”: Academic Success in Unexpected Schools, by Karin Chenoweth, and in fifth place is Daniel T. Willingham’s Why Don’t Students Like School: A Cognitive Scientist Answers Questions About How the Mind Works and What It Means for the Classroom.
